In India, Dalits still feel bottom of the caste ladder

New Delhi: Caste is a brutal form of supremacy. The caste system affects more than 260 million people worldwide, determining every aspect of their lives from employment to relationships and religion. Indian society has miserably failed to integrate Dalits and people belonging to the other communities, providing them equal status.

Recently, a global conference on Caste was held at University of Wolver Hampton to highlight the gendered politics of caste system in India urging Brahmanism to be declared incompatible with modern day democracy.

Although time and again sane voices are raised against India and her caste system, yet international organizations are mostly silent to raise the issue just because of Indian pressure as well as monitory benefits

As per an analytical report, 75 years after independence from the British, caste system is still alive and kicking in India where caste-based oppression and violence is an everyday reality.

Heinous caste-based crimes often go unpunished in India the report said and added that low-caste women are subject to sexual assaults more often than others. Since Hindu caste system is the oldest form of racial discrimination in the world, low caste Hindus are forced to perform most menial and degrading jobs across the country.

India’s so-called democracy has not only failed to eradicate caste system, it has even entrenched and modernized it, the report maintained and argued that Dalits are considered ‘untouchable’ under Indian caste system. Dalits are not allowed to enter temples or own apartments in upper caste neighbourhoods indicating that Indian society has miserably failed to integrate Dalits and people belonging to the other communities.

The report said that Indian caste system is an example of how humans attempt to impose superiority and suffering on others by virtue of their birth.
