Only 149 out of 4,690 convicted under UAPA from 2018 to 2020: Indian Home Minister

New Delhi: Indian Minister  of State for Home Nityanand Rai has said that a total of 4,690 persons were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) between 2018 and 2020 and 149 of them were convicted.

Rai while replying to a written question in Rajya Sabha said 1,321 people were arrested under the UAPA in 2020 while 80 people were convicted in that year. In 2019, 1,948 people were arrested under the UAPA and 34 people were convicted in that year and in 2018, 1,421 people were arrested while 35 people were convicted.

The highest number of people were arrested under the UAPA in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Manipura and Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the aforementioned data, 3.2 per cent conviction was witnessed in UAPA cases between 2018 and 2020. Web Desk
