UK MPs ask their govt to play role in implementing UN resolutions on Kashmir

UK upper house lawmakers urge their govt to play role in implementing UN resolutions on Kashmir

London: The United Kingdom (UK) Upper House lawmakers have urged their government to intervene and prevent genocide in the UN-designated disputed region of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and play its role in implementing the UN resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.

The member of UK’s House of Lords, Lord Qurban Hussain belonging to AJK raised the raised issues during the debate in Britain’s the Hose of Lords. He invited the attention of the members towards; rights to self-determination of Kashmiris, Indian settler colonialism in Indian Illegally Jammu and Kashmir, abrogation of Art 370 & 35A, illegal detentions, killings & press freedom.

Addressing a special debate last on 17 Nov 2022, to discuss situation in Indian Administered Kashmir and in India, Lord Qurban Hussain questioned the British government whether it will “link” any future free trade deal between the UK and India with human rights.

Presenting the historic events which led to UN passing many resolutions on Indian Administered Kashmir giving native Kashmiris a right to determine their future, he questioned the British government to clarify its stand on the UN mandate on Kashmir.

He also asked British gov’t about its role in implementing UN resolutions on Kashmir putting the British government on notice over grave human rights situation in Indian Administered Kashmir. He urged the British Foreign Affairs authorities to include India in the annual list of countries with human rights concerns. “What steps are His Majesty’s (British) Government taking to prevent a genocide in Kashmir?” citing reports of Genocide Watch, as how a process of genocide was already ongoing in Indian Administered Kashmir.

Pointing out that it is India which is deviating from the UN resolutions on Kashmir due to its 900,000 strong occupying troops deployed in Indian Administered Kashmir, Hussain probed whether the British government considered the UN resolutions on Kashmir of 1948 and 1949 to be still relevant, and “what will our government do to help implement them.”

He criticized Indian government by saying, “it is the fascist Indian state that is denying this basic yet universal right to determine future of native Kashmiris and that has caused havoc in the UN-designated disputed region. He presented details of illegal abduction by Indian occupying forces of Kashmiri resistance leadership and activists besides illegal arrest of journalists and human rights defender. He warned the British government as how India was misusing its foreign contribution law was to crack down on human rights NGOs.

Earlier in September 2022, the member of UK’s House of Lords, Lord Qurban Hussain had inquired the British government’s proposed trade deal with India, asking how it would meet Britain’s foreign policy and international principles considering the “one of the worst” human rights record of the South Asian country.

Many British lawmakers joined the debate where questions regarding India’s inhuman and war crimes were debates. British Upper House lawmakers have urged their government to intervene & prevent genocide in UN-designated disputed region of occupied Jammu and Kashmir and play its role in implementing resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir.

The Lord Qurban in his closing remarks said, “Human rights are universal, and Britain is known to be a champion of human rights around the world. As parliamentarians of this country, it is our moral duty to highlight abuses of these rights wherever they occur”.

In his comments on debate held at the British House of Lords, Lord Qurban said such events show us that “there are many of those with consciousness who support causes of freedom and justice.”
