Chairman US House Foreign Affairs Committee Congressman Gregory Meeks has assured that he will look into to release of Human Rights activist Khurram Parvez.
On 29 December, 2021, several members of the Kashmiri diaspora in Los Angeles met with Congressman Meeks at the residence of DrAsifMahmood – a popular democratic leader, a statement issued by diaspora said.
During the meeting, the diaspora discussed about the ongoing Human Rights Violations and intimidation of Journalists and activists in Kashmir. “The diaspora also discussed about the unlawful detention of Khurram Parvez, and urged US Congress to look into Khurram’s unconditional and immediate release.” The statement issued by the diaspora added.
Congressman Meeks assured the diaspora that he will look into getting Khurram released and also expressed his views on Human Rights Violations.
He is also looking into a “Full committee” hearing on Human Rights violations in Kashmir. In October 2019, the Asia Subcommittee had held a hearing on Kashmir during which several members of US Congress had expressed concern over Human Rights violations in Kashmir.
Congressman Meeks said, that the House Foreign Affairs Committee is dedicated to fight for Human Rights and quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”, so he will continue to fight for Human Rights.”
US Congressman Gregory W. Meeks is a senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was elected to Chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2020, making him the first African-American Chair in the committee’s history.
In November, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested prominent human rights activist Khurram Parvez after raiding his residence and office in Srinagar.
Parvez has been booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and other multiple charges. Web Desk
