29 years on: Families of Bijbehara massacre victims await justice

Qaisar Mansoor

The families of martyrs of Bijbehara massacre are still awaiting justice even after the passage of 28 years in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Over 50 innocent Kashmiris were killed in Bijbehara on 22 October 1993, when Indian BSF troops opened fire on peaceful demonstrators who were protesting against military siege of Srinagar’s Hazratbal Shrine. Human Rights Watch report had indicted BSF for killings and HR Commission of India held 13 officers guilty in 1994 but all were acquitted by court in 1996.

Killers of Kashmiris had always been rewarded with promotions and monetary benefits. Families of martyrs of Bijbehara massacre are still awaiting justice even after the passage of 29 years.

The jurisprudence of justice and human rights has been trampled by India under the boots of their killer forces and international community should hold India accountable for all these crimes and massacres.

History in Kashmir is witness to fact that those who are involved in war crimes never held accountable for their henious acts which could be judged from acquittal of Indian forces’ personal involved in Bijbehara massacre.

India wants to instill fear among the Kashmiris by carrying out gruesome massacres in IIOJK. It said Modi-led India plans Bijbehara-like massacres to fortify its illegal occupation of Kashmir. India has to pay heavy price for its heinous crimes in IIOJK. India has a poor human rights record, considering its patronage to the Hindu extremists and lack of political will to punish them, as against minority groups who are often dealt with violently.

Muslim majority of IIOJK has been facing threat to its existence and religious identity due to Indian occupation of J&K for the past over seven decades.

RSS-backed Modi regime is furthering its Hindutva ideology to convert Muslim majority in Kashmir into a minority and covert territory into a Hindu state.

International community should take notice of Kashmiri’s genocide by India in IIOJK.
