Another innocent Muslim youth dies in Indian police custody in held Kashmir

Srinagar: Family of a 21-year-old youth, Muslim Muneer Lone who was tortured to death in police custody, has strongly denied the Indian police’s claim that the he was a drug addict, which possibly led to his death.

The family members while brushing aside the claim asked why police brought him to his house in Srinagar’s Natipora locality in half-dead condition and not rushed him to the hospital, instead.

His mother has filed a petition before a local court in Srinagar seeking a probe into the custodial killing of their son by Indian police.  According to the petition, Shafiqa also added that she was forcibly made to sign a blank paper and given Rs 400 by the cops before fleeing from the scene. The petition sought directions to the Station House Officer (SHO) Crime Branch, Srinagar to lodge an FIR under relevant provisions of law against “accused persons” and all other unidentified police officials who tortured Muslim Muneer.

The petition reads, “There were visible marks of violence and torture seen on the body of the said deceased which makes it clear that the deceased son of the applicant was brutally murdered in the police custody. The family said that the police officials in order to “cover up” the accused have assassinated the character of the Muslim by dubbing him a drug addict in a presser. India must realize that the use of brutal force against the Kashmiri people, extra-judicial killings, custodial torture & deaths, forced disappearances, incarceration of Kashmiri leadership & youth, and other methods of subjugation have failed in the past and will not succeed in the future.

Through a Dossier unveiled last year, Pakistan has provided to the world incontrovertible evidence of the gross and systemic oppression and human rights violations by the Indian occupation forces in the IIOJK.

International community should hold India responsible for its brazen suppression of innocent Kashmiris and play its due role in ensuring a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
