New Delhi: For the first time in history, Delhi is officially the “rape capital” of India. Even while the pace of increase in the number of reported rapes in the city has slowed down, the number of such cases proportionate to its women population was higher than for any other city or State last year.
This year, Delhi is higher in both absolute and proportionate terms, show data from the National Crime Records Bureau. The NCRB collates data from all first information reports filed in police stations across the country. Delhi is now India’s rape capital
Every year in India, 13 February is celebrated as National Women’s Day. On one hand, India celebrates a Women day but on the other India is the most dangerous country in the world for women because of the high risk of sexual violence and slave labor.
Delhi is famous as the rape capital of the world. Hijab controversy is the latest example how respectable women in India is. Sale of Muslim women through Apps like Bulli-Bai shows how concern the government of India is towards the women.
In recent days, cases of brutal rapes and murder of women have emerged from Uttar Pradesh. India is the world’s leading country as far as the rape and crime against women is concerned. Prominent Indian lawyer and activist Indira Jaising warns rape cases across India has become “more aggressive” in the last decade.
She said, “The nature of rape itself is changing in this country in the last 10 years. It’s become more aggressive. It’s become more brutalized. It’s become more of a form of vigilantism and gangsterizm”.
According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 28,000 cases of rape were reported across India in 2020. NCRB data from September 2021 also showed that more than 370,000 cases of crimes against women were reported in the country in 2021. Experts believe that the real figures are much higher as many women do not report such cases due to fear/ shame or both.
According to the NCRB, India saw a 45% increase in reported rapes of Dalit women and girls between 2015 and 2020. The data said, 10 rapes of Dalit women and girls were reported every day in India, on average.
Member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and a prominent feminist, Kavita Krishnan said, “The stripping and parading, face-blackening are shameful practices of caste-based atrocities against persons of oppressed castes.” India army is also famous for rape cases and is a designated rapist army all over the world.
India is the most dangerous nation for sexual violence against women. One woman reported a rape every 16 minutes on average in India.
Four Dalit women raped every day. Indian army used rape and sexual exploitation of Kashmiri women as a weapon to silence freedom struggle. Sexist and misogynist statements about Kashmiri women have come from Indian government and BJP officials. Kashmiri women are exotified and objectified on a daily basis in India.
