‘First’ Kashmir survey produces ‘startling’ results

London: A survey which a British academic says is the first systematic attempt to establish the opinions of Kashmiris has produced “striking results”.

The Kashmiris are facing a Jewish pattern of persecution which was perpetrated by the Hitler Regime in Nazi Germany. The Kashmiris have to live in atmosphere of distress and endure endless stresses due to Indian machinations like; heavy militarization of the civilian areas, frequent curfews, long checking queues, changing residential laws targeting Muslims. The latest addition is tapping telephonic conversations of ordinary civilians. A simple slip of tongue can put someone in terrorist list, depriving rights to live. BBC interviewed house hold women in various parts of Kashmir all spoke of the psychological toll of atmosphere of fear. “Even at home when we are talking, people say don’t talk. Maybe the phone is being tapped. It’s all going psychologically, people talk in hushed tones on the way. It seems the walls have ears too”.

The Indian government is now suppressing voices in a different ways, SM accounts are being suspended, gradually, the environment is being created, where people feel that if they want to save their lives. Ordinary Kashmiris have told the BBC about this environment.

A woman said, ‘Kashmiris have been made to understand that there will be a price to pay for documenting the violence in the region.

Everyone has been silenced by making an example of some people, another woman said, ‘People are suffocating. If someone writes against Indian authorities, he is arrested. There is no news not only outside Kashmir but also inside Kashmir. I fear even the breath we take is under Indian radar.

According to Amnesty International, at least 27 journalists have been arrested and detained by Indian authorities since August 5, 2019. And in the same period, 60 incidents of crackdowns against human rights activists and journalists were reported.

According to Amnesty International, in the three years to 2022, applications filed against this illegal detention increased by 32 percent. And in these cases, there is evidence of the use of controversial laws such as the UAPA, and the PSA. One of the reasons for the fear and uncertainty in Kashmir is probably the changing laws.
