“Halal is only for Muslims. Why is it being imposed on Hindus and people of other religions?” He said, “We have called upon the entire Hindu community to observe a halal-mukt Diwali.

Recently, members of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti have released a booklet titled ‘Halal Jihad’ and have questioned why Halal products being imposed on Hindus and people of other faiths.

Spokesperson for Hindu outfit Janajagruti Samiti, Ramesh Shinde alleged that a “parallel economy was being run through halal certification”, which he said was not permitted by the government of India.

Therefore, any product that has a halal sign should be boycotted. Any manufacturer who has halal certification should be boycotted. McDonalds and other international firms which serve halal food should be boycotted.” BJP leaders like CT Ravi termed the practice of selling Halal meat as ‘economic jihad’.

Pro-Hindu organizations called for a “halal-free” Diwali in Karnataka, demanding segregation of halal and non-halal food items at the outlets of multinational food chains.

The activists also held protests in front of fast-food chains like McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and told the reporters, “We have called upon the entire Hindu community to observe Halal-Mukt Diwali.

All products with Halal certification must be boycotted and the government must stop meat sales on (Hindu) festival days.” Earlier in March, right-wing organizations Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Sri Ram Sene demanded a ban on Halal-certified meat in Karnataka.

The issue was particularly raised during the festival of Ugadi.  In April 2022, a petition was filed with the Supreme Court calling for a complete ban on halal products and halal certifications. BJP is backing such bans demanded by the right-wing groups as the 2023 assembly elections are in fray.

The demand for ban on ‘Halal’ meat comes after the ‘Hijab’ controversy, which has compelled 400 Muslim students in Karnataka’s Udupi district to opt out of class. Web Desk
