How safe are women in India? NCRB data shows over 15pc rise in crime against women in 2021

New Delhi: There has been an increase of 15.3 per cent in crime against women in 2021 as compared to a year ago, with the number of incidents of such crimes per 1 lakh population also witnessing a rise of 8 per cent across India, latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows.

As per the data, a total of 4,28,278 cases of crime against women were registered in 2021, up from 3,71,503 cases in 2020, registering an increase of 56,775 cases during the year.

International community is ridiculing the country and India is now known as the ‘rape capital’ of the world. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, Prime Minister Modi represents the worst aspects of the country. Foreign nations are asking this question why the nation can’t take care of its daughters.” National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its report noted that Delhi also recorded 13,892 cases of crimes against women in 2021, a significant surge of more than 40% compared to 2020 when the figure was 9,782.

On average, over two girls were raped every day in Delhi in 2021, the data showed. The Indian capital registered 13,982 cases of crimes against women in 2021, while the total crimes in all 19 metropolitan cities were 43,414, according to the report. The capital has registered 136 cases of dowry death in 2021, which is 36.26 per cent of total deaths due to the menace in 19 metropolitan cities. According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, highest number of rape cases in the country were registered in Rajasthan (6,337) last year followed by Madhya Pradesh (2,947), Uttar Pradesh (2,845) and Maharashtra (2,496).

There was a 19.34% increase in such cases in Rajasthan, where 5,310 rapes were reported in 2020. As many as 1,452 rape cases in the state in 2021 involved minors, including 18 under the age of six. Four rape cases involved those aged over 60. In more than half of the rape cases, the accused were family friends, neighbours, or other known persons. Rajasthan also reported an increase in crimes against Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes. It was the second worst after Uttar Pradesh in terms of crimes against women.

There was overall an increase of around 17.6% in crimes against women with 40,738 cases followed by Uttar Pradesh (56,083). Opposition attacked the state government over the report saying it reflects the failure of the government. “There is no full-time home minister and the result of this is an increase in crimes. Law and order has deteriorated…there is no proper monitoring and supervision.” Prime Minister Modi gave a speech on 15th August on the safety and protection of women of India and the same day they released the convict of rapists which can clearly states that RSS backed BJP government considers rape a tool to suppress minorities and how women can feel safe in such climate?
