India abstains from voting on nuclear weapons ban at UN

New York: India abstained from voting on nuclear weapons ban saying it is not convinced the move can lead to a comprehensive instrument on nuclear disarmament.

UN General Assembly vote was held on 28 October 2022 in which Israel was asked to get rid of its illegal nuclear weapons.

The resolution was introduced by Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt (on behalf of the Arab League), Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and the un-recognized state of Palestine.

Majority of countries, including Pakistan, voted in the United Nations General Assembly to condemn the Israeli apartheid regime for having nuclear weapons, in flagrant violation of international law (152 countries – 79% of all UN member states).

These countries also adopted a resolution that called on Israel to give up its atomic bombs, join the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and allow the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to supervise its nuclear facilities. India abstains from voting

However, 5 countries voted against the measure: the United States and Canada, Palau, Micronesia and Israel. 24 countries abstained, mostly members of the European Union, NATO allies and India. India abstains from voting

The resolution, document A/C./77/L.2 was titled “The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East”. India is working against the interest of GCC by proliferating India absence from UN Resolution on ‘Risk of nuclear proliferation in Middle East’ in domestic & foreign media especially Middle Eastern countries.
