'Man-made tragedy': Opposition lambasts BJP govt over Morbi bridge collapse

Gujarat: Indian opposition parties slammed RSS-backed Modi government over the collapse of Morbi bridge killing atleast 141 people while 177 people were rescued.

Morbi bridge collapse is one of the worst accidents in India in recent years. The British-era bridge had reopened for the public after remaining shut for renovation work for seven months. It was reportedly thrown open to the public without the requisite ‘fitness certificates’ led to opposition in Gujarat pointing fingers at government negligence.

Indian Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala termed the incident a man-made tragedy and called the BJP government in Gujarat guilty of the incident. BJP government of Gujarat is directly guilty of this heinous crime. Congress leader MP Randeep Singh Surjewala Singh questioned, “Isn’t this a straight criminal conspiracy? How did the BJP government allow the bridge to be opened for public use without a fitness certificate.” Surjewala also attacked PM Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel over the compensation announced for the deceased kin. “PM and CM cannot evade their responsibility by announcing rupee 2 lakh compensation for the lives of Gujarati brothers and sisters.” TMC spokesperson, Kunal Ghosh, accused BJP of playing with the lives of the people only for an election stunt.

Tripura Congress leader Dr Ajoy Kumar attacked PM Modi by quoting remark PM made against the Bengal government in an election rally. Communist Party of India MP Binoy Viswam claimed that bridge collapse incident points to the “gross negligence” of the BJP government.
