Kashmir, the oldest dispute at the UN Agenda

The Kashmir dispute is the oldest unresolved international conflict in the world today. Pakistan considers Kashmir as its core dispute with India. So does the international community, except India.

5 January is commemorated as the Right to Self-Determination Day for people of Indian Administered Kashmir. On 5 Jan 1949, UNCIP adopted resolution that guarantees free & fair plebiscite in Indian Administered Kashmir to enable Kashmiri people realizes their right to self-determination.

Today’s commemoration is aimed at reminding global community that they cannot shy away from their responsibility towards Kashmir.  UN must honour its commitments that were made 74 years ago.

Indian actions have been widely rejected by Intl community, UN & Intl HR organizations. People of Indian Administered Kashmir are being subjected to collective punishment by Indian occupation forces who have converted the territory into largest militarized zone in the world.

Kashmiris tried to organize themselves against injustices of Indian which New Delhi tried to suppress through brutal state terrorism. In order to maintain its illegal control, India has continued its repressive regime in the Indian Administered Kashmir through various machinations. Indian forces have employed various draconian laws like Indian Administered Kashmir Disturbed Areas Act, Armed Forces Special Powers Act & Public Safety Act for arbitrarily arrest of any individual for an indefinite period and even killing them without any legal procedure.

Current situation in Indian Administered Kashmir is worst in recent history where people have been deprived of their fundamental rights, including rights to life, food, health, freedom of expression & assembly. Since 05 Aug 2019, through continuous illegal & unilateral steps, Modi’s govt has created an environment of fear & chaos in Indian Administered Kashmir.

Brutal lockdowns & absence of fundamental freedoms have challenged conscience of international community & India’s credentials of being a respectable member of UN / World Community. Recently, the UNGA has adopted Pakistan-sponsored resolution on “Universal Realization of the Right of the People to Self-determination with the consensus of 72 countries.

Pakistan will continue to extend moral, political & diplomatic support to just cause of people of Indian Administered Kashmir till realization of right to self-determination in accordance with UN Security Council
