Stop demolitions in Kashmir immediately: Amnesty International

New Delhi: Amnesty International India has responded to the ongoing demolition of homes and businesses in parts of Kashmir that started on February 5 demanding it is stopped immediately.

Amnesty International has pointed out numerous demolitions only taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, India’s only Muslims-majority region.

According to the report of the Amnesty International UK, the UK construction equipment giant JCB’s bulldozers are being used by the Modi government to demolish houses. Harassing and dismantling properties of local Kashmiris in the name of “New Colonial Land Laws” is just paving the way for illegal settlements.

The hidden agenda behind these draconian diktats is to pave ways for non-locals, altering the demography of the valley. The Indian government also made changes to domicile and to facilitate new settlements in the occupied territory. Kashmiris fear that India seems to be following the model of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

As per this model, the Modi regime seeks to establish settler colonies that will help it control the territory. The European Union’s leading officials, who see themselves as leaders in the defence of human rights, cannot turn a blind eye to such despicable actions.

The President is requested to use the good office to immediately and strongly urge the Indian government to stop all human rights atrocities enabling oppressed people to enjoy the right to self-determination according to the UN resolution.
