Human rights abuses against Dalits become normal routine in Modi’s India

New Delhi: Caste violence is one of the most dangerous form of violence in India. Being born in a Dalit family is a curse, as human rights abuses against Dalits by upper caste Hindus have become normal routine in India.

Dalits, also known as untouchables, are relegated to lowest jobs in India and have been victims of Hindu caste system for centuries besides subjected to numerous forms of caste discrimination and brutal violence.

Incidents of violence against Dalits have climbed significantly since fascist Modi’s ascension to power and have witnessed systematic marginalization. As witnessed in Chitha village, basic facilities like toilets, housing, drinking water, health facilities and roads are not available on the ground.

National Crimes Records Bureau revealed in its 2020 report that Uttar Pradesh has highest number of crimes against scheduled castes since 2013. Across India, dozens of major incidents were reported, few of them are listed below: –

Recently, in Madurai district, a 27-year-old Dalit man was murdered.

In Taraka village, Haryana, husband of a Dalit woman (sarpanch) was fatally attacked and humiliated by saying caste indicative words. They warned her of dire consequences if she did not resign.

In Hyderabad, family of 15 years old school girl, who was forced to strip on allegations of cheating during a test, has reportedly been receiving calls from a man pressurizing them to drop the case. The man has offered a bribe of Rs 3 lakh for the same.

A 50-year-old woman belonging to the Dalit community died after three days when a man Lalilt Chaudhary slit her throat with an axe, after he failed to sexually assault her.

In Mathure, an eight years old Dalit boy was found dead when his body was found fished in a stream. The boy’s father stated that the Thakur family had killed his son and dumped his body in the stream.

In Amroha, UP, an 18 years old Dalit girl, student of Class XII, was kidnapped by five people at gunpoint. Police failed to recover the girl after lapse of 3 months.

It is pertinent to mention here that, Dalits are not allowed to enter temples or own apartments in upper caste neighbourhoods indicating that Indian society has miserably failed to integrate Dalits and people belonging to the other communities.

Indian caste system is an example of how humans attempt to impose superiority and suffering on others by virtue of their birth.

International organizations are mostly silent to raise the issue of Indian caste system, caste-based discrimination in India – a challenge to modern world. Web Desk
