Khurram Pervez: Jailed Kashmir activist awarded top rights prize

Srinagar: Jailed Kashmiri rights activist Khurram Parvez has won the Martin Ennals Award, one of the world’s most prestigious human rights prizes, along with two other campaigners from Chad and Venezuela, with the jury hailing their “courage”.

Khurram Parvez is a programme coordinator of human rights group the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) in Indian Administered Kashmir. He is also the chairman of Asian Federation against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD).

He was arrested on 22nd Nov 21 in a framed case of ‘terror funding’ from the IIOJ&K during a raid by Indian Intelligence agency. He has extensively worked on documenting the abuses committed by Indian security forces as coordinator of JKCCS. Khuram Parvez has been detained because of his efforts to highlights violations of human rights in Indian Administered Kashmir by Indian occupational forces.

In 2022, he has been named by Time Magazine in its list of “100 Most Influential People of 2022.” Despite all odds the resolve of Khurram serves as a beacon of light for people of Kashmir in their peaceful struggle against India’s state-sponsored terrorism.

The international community, particularly the UN, should hold India accountable over harassment of journalists and rights activists who become the voices of Indian Administered Kashmir.
