Ladakh alliance announces to launch agitation against Indian tycoons’ grip on local businesses

LADAKH: The Ladakh Tourist Trade Alliance (LTTA), an umbrella body of various trade, tourism, religious and political organisations in Leh, has announced to launch a non-cooperation movement after July 15 against Indian business tycoons, intending to capture tourism industry in Ladakh.

The LTTA further cautioned the outsiders to cease funding projects in Ladakh after July 15 as no partnership or construction will be allowed after the stipulated time.

Addressing a press conference in Leh, LTTA president PT Kunzang said 90% of people in Ladakh depend on the tourism industry and that no outsider, be it anyone will be allowed to set up a business in this sector in the region. “We held several press conferences earlier, while our religious bodies set a two month deadline for the outsiders to cease funding projects in Ladakh. Those who have leased out their properties or intend to run any sort of business in partnership will not be allowed to ruin our only source of income,” he said.

The LTTA president also said that a non-cooperation movement will be launched after July 15 and all those intending to set business in Ladakh will be opposed tooth and nail. “It is not local vs non-local but we cannot allow anyone to snatch our bread and butter. Tourism is the only source of income for the whole of Ladakh,” he said.

The LTTA also warned a prominent Indian hotelier Kapil Chopra to stop construction of Postcard hotel in Ladakh, saying only locals of Ladakh will be allowed to establish business in the territory. “Kapil Chopra is a big name in the hotel industry having hotels in four major international cities, but we would like to warn him to stop construction forthwith. We would also like to warn all those having leased out their land to Chopra or intend to be his partners to cease their plans as LTTA will not allow any construction in Ladakh,” he said.
