Maldives National Party to oppose bill criminalizing India Out campaign

Male: Maldives National Party (MNP) led by MP Col rt. Mohamed Nazim and former Commissioned of Police Abdulla Riyaz has stated that they are against the controversial law criminalizing the “India Out” movement.

At a press conference held by MNP, MP Col ® Mohamed Nazim stated that the right to freedom of expression granted under Article 27 pf the constitution should be granted for everyone and that any bill which contradicts to the Constitution cannot be passed. He further noted that even if it is a bill aimed at preventing negative effects on bilateral relations, such a bill cannot be passed.

He further stated that their Parliamentary Group has decided that such a bill cannot be passed and that the MNP will not support any bill which would harm any rights of the people.

“We see some parts of the bill as saying a single phrase and it being criminalized and if proven, ending up in jail. We will not support that. We will not support any bill which curtails the right to freedom of expression” said MP Col rt. Mohamed Nazim.

This comes as the ruling party’s Parliamentary Group passed a decision to introduce and pass the bill which has been labeled as a draconian bill targeting the fundamental right to freedom of expression. Both the Progressive Congress Coalition and the MNP have expressed their opposition towards the bill. The Maldivesnewsnetwork.com
