Maldives opposition holds India Out campaign

Male: The opposition alliance Progressive Congress Coalition has held another rally as a part of the “India Out” campaign. Today’s rally was held in R.Meedhoo.

The rally was joined by the opposition leader and Presidential candidate former President Abdulla Yameen. He was welcomed to the island by a large crowd of supporters who were also clad in red.

At the rally, the former President called for the unconditional removal of all Indian military forces in the Maldives. The India Out campaign has gained a huge momentum in the Maldives as it has evolved into a national level campaign.

Prior to today’s campaign, former President Abdulla Yameen held similar large-scale rallies in F, K and Sh Atoll.

The ruling party has also reacted to the campaign, by drafting a law criminalizing the “India Out” campaign. The law which has been described by the opposition alliance as a draconian attack on the constitutional right to freedom of expression, is set to be introduced to the Parliament in the upcoming weeks. The opposition alliance remains unfazed as they state that the current ruling party cannot curtail the rights of the people through such a law.
