No place for minorities in India

Qaisar Mansoor

Religious minorities have suffered worst form of atrocities since Modi’s BJP came into power in 2014. Modi government is not leaving any stone unturned to turn India into a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu state).

Constitution of India recognizes in Article 25 (1) that “all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practice and propagate religion.” Whereas, India’s Dalit community have faced systemic persecution by so-called upper-caste Hindus for ages.

After Anti-Conversion bill brought in, entire situation has emboldened right-wing Hindu extremists to unleash a reign of terror on the oppressed minorities living in India. Recently, in Ghataprabha, Belagavi, extremist Hindutva goons had disrupted a luncheon prayer at the residence of Pastor Akshaykumar karaganvi, a converted Dalit Christian.

Meanwhile, Kerala Congress leader VD Satheesan has written letter to PM Modi over alleged wave of attacks against minority groups and blamed government for not arresting culprits amid gross HRVs across the country. On dismal condition of oppressed minorities in India, Journalist Pieter Friedrich will observe seven-day hunger strike from 06 Jan for the persecuted Christians of India. Across India, dozens of major incidents were reported, few of them are listed below: –

In district Pilibhit, UP, a Dalit contractor Ramraj was beaten to death by Upper class Hindus in Sapah village. According to details the victim refused to give his tractor to the culprits.

In Vaishali, Bihar, a 20-year-old Dalit girl was gang raped and murdered by upper caste people for 5 days. Her parents are waiting for justice.

In Kanth, Moradabad, a seven-year-old Muslim girl abducted, raped and murdered. The girl reportedly went missing on 22 Dec from outside her house, when she went out to play.

In Karnataka, Belagavi, a Dalit family was beaten up by members of right wing organization, accusing them of forcibly converting people to Christianity.

In Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, VHP and other allied outfits led a massive “Shourya Yatra Rally”. When participants tried to enter Gandhi Nagar (Muslim majority area), clash erupted and stones were pelted by both communities. Police case was filed on the false complaints by Bajrang Dal worker Pankaj Khushwaha. Police took action only against Muslims and arrested 12 accused while booked 30.

Reports of lynching and physical bashing of unarmed Muslims by armed and organized RSS extremists have become a usual routine in India and IIOJK. They are subjected to extreme oppression and tyranny at the hands of Indian authorities.

Even, President Ulema Hind, Mahmood Madni has written letter to Amit Shah for minorities and HR watch drawing attention towards HR violations in Assam. International rights bodies must come forward to save the Kashmiri Muslims and other suppressed communities from Hindu fascism.

Actually, India has become a dangerous place for minorities, especially Muslims. Such is Hindu nationalism, that neither their homes nor schools and worship places are safe.

In the latest incident, the Muslims are being targeted in Indian State of Assam where a brutal eviction drive against Muslim residents has been launched.

Just last year the Muslims in New Delhi were stigmatized and blamed for the spread of Covid-19, which resulted in increased attacks on them. Scores of Muslims were killed in those attacks.

The Indian security forces are either themselves involved in perpetrating brutalities against Muslims with impunity or provide protection to the ‘Hindutva’ extremists and terrorists who regularly indulge in lynching and other forms of torture against Muslims.

The Indian Muslims are also being robbed of their citizenship through legislation such as Citizenship Amendment Act.

In fact had such sort of oppression taken place with minorities in any Muslim country, the whole world would have come together not only in condemnation but also held it accountable through steps such as sanctions.

However, the very transgressions on the part of Modi government are totally being overlooked out of political and economic expediency.
