Colombo: Opposition Deputy Leader Mohamed Saeed has met with the European Union’s delegation to the Maldives in Sri Lanka to express concerns on the incarceration of opposition leader former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
MP Mohamed Saeed tweeted stating that they shared the opposition’s concerns regarding the incarceration of the opposition leader and the government’s influence on the judiciary to the European Union’s delegation to the Maldives at their diplomatic mission in Sri Lanka. The Maavashu Constituency MP Mohamed Saeed stated that they shared their concerns on the government’s interference and influence on the judiciary to the delegation.
MP Mohamed Saeed also expressed concerns on the Judicial Service Commission led by ruling party President Mohamed Nasheed and his former attorneys. The commission which currently carries the power to suspend, appoint and dismisses judges are led by active members of the ruling party.
The opposition deputy leader also shared their concerns on the recently leaked audio tapes of three of the five judges who presided over former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s trial, alleges that they passed the guilty verdict under duress. At least one of the audio tapes has been verified as authentic by the Maldives Police Service after forensic analysis was conducted on the tapes.
MP Mohamed Saeed also shared the opposition’s concerns with the European Union’s delegation to the Maldives on the incarceration of the opposition leader for over 700 days.
This comes after the opposition shared their concerns with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK and the UK Parliament on the incarceration of the opposition leader and their concerns on the government influence on the judiciary. The Maldives News.Network
