Caste hatred: Over 1.3 lakh cases of crime against Dalits since 2018 in India

New Delhi: Nearly 139,045 cases under crime against Dalits have been registered in different states between 2018 and 2020 with 50,291 such crimes reported last year alone, the government told parliament.

Uttar Pradesh registered a maximum of 36,467 cases of crime against scheduled castes (SC) in the three years, followed by Bihar (20,973 cases), Rajasthan (18,418) and Madhya Pradesh (16,952), as per data from the home ministry.

India’s Dalit community have faced systemic persecution by so-called upper-caste Hindus for ages. After Anti-Conversion bill brought in, entire situation has emboldened right-wing Hindu extremists to unleash a reign of terror on the oppressed minorities living in India. Recently, a Dalit woman activist Bindu Ammini was assaulted by unidentified man at Kozhikhode beach. She said, this was not the first attack on her.

Moreover, Dalit Journalist Meena Kotwal is facing online abuse and threats after she posted a video of herself burning the “Manusmriti Dahan Divas”.

Meanwhile, Kerala Congress leader VD Satheesan has written letter to PM Modi over alleged wave of attacks against minority groups and blamed government for not arresting culprits amid gross HRVs across the country. On dismal condition of oppressed minorities in India, Journalist Pieter Friedrich is observing seven-days hunger strike since 06 Jan for the persecuted community of India. Across India, dozens of major incidents were reported, few of them are listed below: –

In Pikhor, Junagarh, posters have been pasted by upper class Hindus having writing, “No entry for Dalits in the temple premises”.

In Jharkhand, members of Bhokta tribe killed a Dalit Sanju Pradhan after dragging him in the streets and then burning his body for cutting the so called sacred tree named “Sal Tree”.

In Aligarh, UP, a 21-year-old sanitation worker Puneet belonging to Dalit community was shot dead by upper class Hindu security guard Anshu Chuhan at a mall.

In Muzaffarnagar, UP, two Dalit women (Seema and Kalpana) were booked under several Sections of Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religious Ordinance, 2020 for allegedly trying to convert people to Christianity by offering of money.

In Gandhinagar, Amar Singh Vasava was forced to clean a chocked up drain in Navrati Chowk without any safety gear. Earlier, a sanitation worker died in Varansai after being trapped in sewerage line for 18 hours.

In Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, an 18-year-old Dalit youth was tied up and brutally assaulted, reportedly after he tried to meet his 19-year-old non Dalit lover. Web Desk
