Rally to release innocent Singhs in Indian prisons on Jan 11

Chandigarh: Sikh activists of Punjab will carry out a car rally on January 11 2022 (tomorrow) from Shri Jyoti Sroop Sahib to Governor House Chandigarh. The rally aims to spread awareness about the cause of Sikh prisoners who are not being released from various Indian jails despite serving the terms of their sentences.

Earlier, Sikh organizations carried out a march in Amritsar for the release of “political prisoners”, who have been “languishing” in various jails since mid-90’s. These prisoners are Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar, Jagtar Singh Hawara, Beant Singh, Jagtar Singh Tara, Balwant Singh Rajoana, Gurmeet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Shamsher Singh, Gurdeep Singh and Paramjit Singh.

Far from being released, the government did not even give him parole. The double standard of law for Sikh prisoners is not right According to the constitution, a prisoner whose sentence is completed cannot be kept in jail. Government should release them as soon as possible.

It is notable that Prof. Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar has been jailed since 1995. His permanent release was cleared by Indian government in 2019 on the occasion of 550th Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Nanak. Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh said that Indian laws regarding release of indeterminate sentence prisoners are open to interpretation and prevarication of the executive. The continued detention of prisoners not only violates the principle of equality but is also a clear violation of UN Declaration of Human Rights. Web Desk
