Two-nation theory – the foresight of Jinnah

Qaisar Mansoor

Systematic oppression and marginalization of Muslims being witnessed in the Bharitiya Janta Party (BJP) ruled India has vindicated the concept of the Two-Nation Theory on the basis of which Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah led the movement to create Pakistan.

The Modi’s fascism reaffirmed that the Muslims needed a separate state in the sub-continent to live their life according to their religious, cultural and social norms.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s saying in 1946 “Muslims who are opposing Pakistan will spend rest of their lives proving loyalty to India” came true. Modi’s saffronization drive, ultra-Hindu nationalism, cow lynching and religious discrimination is validating the vision of MA Jinnah.  BJP government under the leadership of Modi is closely working with Hindu extremists to transform India into complete ‘Hindu Rashtra (a Hindu State). This shows that they are trying to dismantle secular India and transform it into an entity based on Hindutva.

The political support encouraged Hindu extremists to commit more crimes against Muslims. Citizenship Amendment Act passed by Indian government reflects the agenda of Hindutva which highlights that there is no place for Muslims in today’s India. In 1939, MS Golwalker published a book, ‘We, or Our Nationhood Defined’ in which he asserted that the minority communities of India (specifically Muslim) should merge with the Hindu nation or perish.

He wrote that non-Hindus in India could not be considered Indian unless they were ‘purified’ (i.e. converted to Hinduism). The current situation of India, especially the recent Hijab Row has proved that the steps taken by Jinnah which were born out of the two-nation theory were essentially accurate. The process of systematically eliminating the minorities from the country will result in the ruin of secular India. As the Hindutva believes in the supremacy of Hindus and there are no equal rights for minorities, it gives room to Hindu fanatics to kill others. RSS policies are not only a risk for secular India, but also a great threat for the peace of South Asia.

It said that the ongoing repression unleashed by the Hindutva extremists backed by the BJP government against defenseless Indian Muslims has validated that the Two-Nation Theory is even more relevant today.

Indian Supreme Court’s verdict regarding the Babri Masjid, making of anti-Muslims laws like the Citizenship Amendment Act, attacks on Muslims, ban on hijab as well as scrapping of Kashmir specific Article 370 prove that the Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s vision that the future of Muslims of the subcontinent lay in a separate homeland still holds true.

Actually, the Hindutva policies of RSS-backed BJP regime pose a great threat to peace in South Asia.
