46th UNHRC session: India betrays Sri Lanka

New York: India abstained from voting on a contentious resolution at the 46th UNHRC session that sought to fix responsibility for war crimes and human rights violations by Sri Lankan authorities.

The 47-member UNHRC adopted a resolution, sponsored by a group of countries that includes the UK, Germany and Canada, which gives the UN human rights chief the mandate to collect and preserve evidence of crimes related to Sri Lanka’s civil war that ended in 2009 with the defeat of Tamil Tiger rebels.

This is the second time India has abstained from voting on a resolution on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC since 2014. India has voted twice in favour of resolutions against Sri Lanka in 2012 and 2013, which were very critical of Sri Lanka.
