Human rights violations: Dalit man dies in Indian police custody, kin allege torture

Jind, Haryana: Indian police subjected a Dalit man to custodial killing in Jind district of the Indian state of Haryana.

The youth identified as Pappi, 30, who was arrested in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act died at a police station in Julana town of the state. The victim was arrested on April 13.

Family members of the victim stage a protest outside the Julana police station. The family said that the man died due to police torture. They said that the victim had injury marks over his body. They refused to cremate the body of the deceased until the concerned policemen are dismissed and an FIR is registered against them.

Pappi’s wife Asha said that her husband was assaulted by the police when they came to take him into custody. She said that the police came to their place at 4 pm and started beating him. They did not even inform the family where they took Pappi. When Asha tried to rescue him, they hit her and she fell unconscious.
