Lacroix to update on UN peacekeeping operations

United Nations: The UN Deputy Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix will offer an update on the UN´s work in Mali and the Central African Republic.

The high-ranking official will meet with the press to talk about various peacekeeping-related issues, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Lacroix has echoed the call of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for a global ceasefire in order to concentrate actions to fight the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vulnerable people who live amid conflicts are among those most affected by health crises such as the current one, Lecroix tweeted.

On Twitter, Guterres also posted on Sunday that a cessation of conflicts around the world is urgently needed to ease the suffering, create a space for diplomacy and allow humanitarian access, including the delivery of Covid-19 vaccines.

‘When people fight each other amid a pandemic, the virus is the only winner,’ he live-tweeted.

Similarly, Guterres harped on the significance of being more financially supported for conflict prevention and peacebuilding operations at this critical time of pandemic.plenglish.com
